Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
