Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
