Texas Top Legal Officer Files Lawsuit Against Acetaminophen Manufacturers Concerning Autism Spectrum Allegations

Courtroom Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, a Trump ally who is running for the United States Senate, accused the drug companies of hiding safety concerns of acetaminophen

The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is taking legal action against the producers of acetaminophen, claiming the companies withheld safety concerns that the medication posed to pediatric brain development.

This legal action follows a month after Former President Trump publicized an unverified association between consuming Tylenol - also known as acetaminophen - throughout gestation and autism in young ones.

The attorney general is suing the pharmaceutical giant, which previously sold the drug, the only pain reliever recommended for pregnant women, and the current manufacturer, which now manufacturers it.

In a declaration, he stated they "misled consumers by gaining financially from suffering and promoting medication regardless of the potential hazards."

The manufacturer says there is insufficient reliable data tying acetaminophen to autism spectrum disorder.

"These manufacturers misled for generations, deliberately risking countless individuals to increase profits," Paxton, from the Republican party, stated.

The manufacturer said in a statement that it was "deeply concerned by the spread of false claims on the reliability of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, Kenvue also stated it had "continuously evaluated the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that indicates a verified association between taking paracetamol and autism."

Organizations acting on behalf of physicians and healthcare providers concur.

The leading OB-GYN organization has stated acetaminophen - the primary component in acetaminophen - is among limited choices for pregnant women to address discomfort and fever, which can create significant medical dangers if ignored.

"In over twenty years of research on the utilization of acetaminophen in pregnancy, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the use of acetaminophen in any period of pregnancy results in brain development issues in offspring," the organization commented.

The lawsuit mentions current declarations from the former administration in asserting the medication is allegedly unsafe.

In recent weeks, Trump generated worry from public health officials when he told expectant mothers to "fight like hell" not to take Tylenol when sick.

The US Food and Drug Administration then published an announcement that doctors should think about restricting the use of acetaminophen, while also declaring that "a proven link" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in minors has remains unverified.

The Health Department head Robert F Kennedy Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had vowed in April to conduct "comprehensive study program" that would determine the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a short period.

But experts warned that discovering a unique factor of autism spectrum disorder - thought by researchers to be the result of a intricate combination of inherited and environmental factors - would prove challenging.

Autism spectrum disorder is a type of permanent neurological difference and disability that affects how individuals experience and interact with the world, and is identified using medical professional evaluations.

In his court filing, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is seeking the Senate - alleges the manufacturer and Johnson & Johnson "willfully ignored and tried to quiet the evidence" around paracetamol and autism.

The case seeks to make the firms "destroy any marketing or advertising" that states acetaminophen is safe for pregnant women.

This legal action parallels the concerns of a collection of parents of young ones with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who filed suit against the producers of acetaminophen in two years ago.

Judicial authorities dismissed the legal action, declaring investigations from the plaintiffs' authorities was not conclusive.
